Cakes and Some More Cakes

Cakes are for life and not only for birthdays.

I made my first cake on Valentine’s Day for my husband. But, that is not the story. The story is about my experience and the entire procedure of baking a cake. It’s always been my fantasy to bake a cake for my beloved partner.

One fine Friday, I did some research for cake baking classes online and I found out about one option suitable for my daily schedule. It was not really a weekly/monthly course but a one day workshop. When I called there for details, I came to know that I could attend the workshop on any non-working Saturday, which was the very next day! I asked two of my friends to join me for the workshop and they agreed, and on Saturday morning, all three of us were there. Ms. Shweta welcomed us at her house with a smiling face. As soon as we entered her house, we saw that all preparations were already done and her house was very beautiful. For next 5 to 6 hours, we were totally dedicated to the workshop. She was explaining each and every small detail regarding baking. She was showing us few tactics and tricks as well. Regardless of having a lot of time, she was giving us to do some of the steps on our own, which was very helpful.

Cakes5-6 hours hard work was very delicious as shown in the image. They are named as (from top left to right), Chocolate Truffle Cake, Black Forest Cake, Butterscotch cake and last but not the least Pineapple Upside Down Cake. She asked us to taste each and every cake and cut into equal pieces and packed them very nicely so that we could take them with us. All those cakes were awesome in taste. We thanked her for the workshop and were on our way home with lovely memories about the whole experience.

Fast forward a few weeks. Now it was my turn to bake a cake and I was very nervous. I had planned to prepare my first cake on Valentine’s Day for my husband. It was our first one, just after the wedding. But, it was not really a surprise for him as I didn’t know the shopping places near our house for all the stuff I’d need for baking. So of course, I took him along to Hypercity, Malad and we got all the material which cost us around INR 5k — including all the ingredients, the baking containers and measuring equipment as well.

Note: The bill was paid by my husband. So effectively, my first cake cost him around 5k/-

The First Time…

First Cake made by meFirst Cake made by me

So, this was my first cake. No cream, little bit of decoration. But, let me tell you one thing. It was very well baked and heavenly soft. My whole family loved the cake. Where 4 cakes were prepared in 5-6 hours, I was preparing a single cake in 4 hours. Hmmmmm…

The Creamy Second…

Second cakeThen, the second time it was my father-in-law’s 60th birthday. I prepared the cake for the night and he cut the cake by 12 am.  My confidence level was a little bit higher this time. So, cream and a little bit of decoration were added to the base cake. Everyone enjoyed the cake and my journey of baking cakes had started…

The Family Gettogether…

Once, our family friend invited us for dinner at their place and my mother-in-law asked me to prepare a cake. I was happy that she asked me to prepare a cake but then, I became nervous too. I had gone to the level one that is beginner’s level 🙁 Still I needed some perfection this time. I finished all the preparations in 3 hrs this time and the outcome was 99% perfect I must say. This cake was celebrated in the get-together.

The Colors of Success…

Now it was time to add colours to it. It was my parents’ wedding anniversary and I tried baking a well-designed cake for them. When my father saw that cake, he thought it was a cake we bought from the shop and this was a compliment for me! He still couldn’t believe that the cake is baked by me.

The Shared Sweetness…

I was posting all these photos of cakes on social media. All my office friends who saw those photos started asking me for a cake. So,
I thought of baking a cake for them as well and I got a suitable occasion as well. It was nothing else but my birthday! I prepared a cake for all of them. Oh, wait! There is one more insight story. I had prepared 2 cakes for my birthday. The second one for was for my mother-in-law. Any guesses? Oh Yes! my mother-in-law and I — we both share the same birthdate!

The Journey Ahead…
